(A few Questions and some Answers about pre-ordering the #liedekijn artbook.)

What is the liedekijn artbook about?

liedekijn is a group sequential exhibition which re-tells a medieval Dutch folktale full of magic and infatuation and murder and revenge. The exhibition of 24 works on paper will be held at The Front Gallery in Lyneham (ACT, Australia),  Easter 2013. (All works will be available for purchase.)

Because the artists come from four different countries, not everyone will be able to get to the exhibition.

The artbook collects all 24 pieces as well as the story (the translation of the original poem).

What’s the point of pre-ordering?

Printing full-colour books is expensive – particularly when I am not interested in compromising on quality, and I don’t want to send the print job to China, so the cost per unit is relatively high.

The point of the book is more to share the art than to get rich. If we can cover the costs of printing, I’ll be super-happy! So pre-orders give me a rough idea of how many books to have printed, while minimising the financial risk.

Why make pre-orders cheaper?

We can make the pre-orders cheaper because we know how many we will need to print – there’s no risk of having left-over stock, or wondering if we’ll break even.

The cover price will be higher, to let us cover our costs AND allow retailers to cover theirs!

How do you know that you can trust me?

I guess you don’t – this *is* the internet, and people online can be kind of dodgy. But I am trustworthy, honest! I’ve done this kind of thing before, and it worked out well.

(Last year I worked on the Beginnings Anthology project (with some people from the @ACTComicMeet). We used indiegogo to raise the funds, and we delivered a book that was almost twice as big as promised, on time, and everyone received their perks straight away.)

He is pointy – his sword, his beard, his ears, his cheekbones, his shoes.

A recurring motif on his lute, the pommel of his sword, and (if you like) on his clothing (belt buckle, cloak-pin) is a tree in a circle.

“No part of the sword was invented in vain,” said Johannes Liechtenauer in 1389 in one of his famous fechtbucher while describing how hilt components can be used in battle. The Black Prince Sword is solid proof of this statement. Its massive pommel could be used as a mace to bludgeon an opponent’s head or face. In armoured combat, the sword could be gripped by the blade and used as a hammer; the resulting trauma from strikes caused by the Style 8 guard would be ruinous.
